Abstract

Chronic nonspecific low back pain (CNLBP) is a highly prevalent condition that compromises spinal stability and significantly impacts quality of life. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 60% to 70% of the world's population will experience episodes of low back pain at some point in their lives, making it one of the leading causes of disability and work absenteeism in adults. CNLBP is characterized by persistent pain for more than 12 weeks, without a defined anatomical cause, often associated with muscle weakness, postural changes, sedentary lifestyle, and occupational factors. In this context, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) stands out as a relevant therapeutic approach, as it promotes the strengthening of deep muscles, improves motor coordination, and contributes to pain reduction and functional improvement. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of PNP in improving functionality in patients with LCI, through an integrative review conducted between February and October 2025. The PICOT strategy was used to guide the inclusion criteria and search the BVS, PubMed, SciELO, and PEDro databases, covering publications from the last 10 years, with no language restrictions. The descriptors used were: “Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation,” “Low Back Pain,” “Chronic Pain,” “Exercise Therapy,” and “Low Back Pain.” The search resulted in 493 studies, of which four met the eligibility criteria and were included in the final analysis. The results showed that PNF promotes significant improvements in the quality of life of patients with LCI, especially in reducing pain and disability, as well as gains in balance and core stability. It was concluded that the technique is a safe and effective therapeutic strategy, acting in an integrated manner on the functional and psychosocial aspects of chronic nonspecific low back pain.
